I just received these great tips on dressing for less from my friend, Lauren, who is an Etcetera Sales Consultant. With the current economy, we can all use these tips!

Save money by planning ahead and following these simple rules:

No Impulse buying!
- Before the beginning of the season, take an inventory of your closet and make a list of things you need. Armed with that information you will purchase fewer items - but they will expand and update your existing wardrobe. You will have more options with fewer dollars.
Buy quality.
- Initially, they cost more per piece. However, they will wear better, last longer and ultimately cost less than inferior merchandise.
Invest in classic styles.
- They blend season to season without looking dated. To add a touch of "Wow!", allow yourself one great trend piece each season to update your classics.
Mix and match.
- Buy a few pieces that coordinate to make multiple outfits. Bring with you anything that needs refreshing with a new added piece.
Work around one to two core colors that look great you.
- When you work your wardrobe around a core color (or two colors) - black, for example, you can select add-ons as updates without buying a whole outfit. For example, an optic print skirt with a basic black turtleneck and jacket. Also, you will need fewer accessories.
Stay on solid ground.
- Solid separates mix and match more easily and are less recognizable than prints; thus, they usually can be work much more often that memorable statement pieces. Add touches of prints, plaids and stripes to jazz things up!

Trends - Spring 2009

Designers have been influenced by the economic downturn in their spring clothing lines. To lighten our mood, they are using bright colors like tangerine, lemon and raspberry. Classic pieces that last will be popular as we tighten our spending. The good news - we have a broad range of choices, so choose what works best for you.

Waists are tied, wrapped, cinched, slung and draped from the skinny belt to the wide. Wide leg or skinny leg pants, cropped or regular jackets, long or short skirts, bright or neutral color?

When buying, focus on more classic pieces and throw in a few of the stronger trends.

Color – lemon, raspberry, turquoise, tangerine

The bright colors this Spring will include lemon, raspberry, turquoise, and tangerine. Neutrals such as nude and tan were seen paired with black. Pastels did make an appearance but the focus was either bright color or nude neutrals.

Band Dresses

This look has remained strong over the last few seasons but the typical look is changing. You see more of this hanging on the shoulders and smaller bands than precious seasons.

Geometric Shapes

Add some fun to your wardrobe with some crazy prints.

Metallics

This season the metallic shades in gold, silver, bronze, and platinum are more sheen than sparkle.

Asymmetrical Dresses

The one shoulder look, along with asymmetrical hemlines and ruffles will be popular.

Cropped Jackets

Moving from the cold of winter, to the heat of summer, this will be one of the most used pieces in your closet.

Ruffles & Bows

This look helps you relive those girly days but throws in the romance. Ruffles and bows dressed up simple designs in the Spring 2009 Collections.

Animal Prints

The python look will be seen more this season, including shoes and handbags.

Wide-Leg and Skinny Pants

These are both popular this Spring, so pick which style looks best on you!
