Tuesday Tidbits #4 – Sexting – A Must Read For Parents, Videogames and Information Overload

Today I read an article in our local newspaper titled, Houston ISD to Ban Students From Sexting (link at bottom of article). It stated that the HISD school board was expected to revise the student code of conduct to include punishment for those that are caught sexting. They mentioned that this was a concern brought up by many principals. As parents we need to be informed of the latest technology and trends that are affecting our kids today.

I am sure many of you are thinking my child would never do that. And I hope you are right, but we need to talk to our kids and help them understand the consequences of their actions.

A couple of weeks ago, I read another article about sexting that nearly broke my heart. Think Your Kids Aren't Sexting? Think Again! was posted at Momlogic.com. Here is the intro to the article:

Everyone's heard about the dangers of sexting -- sending nude pictures and videos over the Internet -- but no one thinks that their kid would be dumb enough to do it. Well, they are, and they do, and it can change their lives forever.

It is the story of a 15-year-old girl whose life was changed when she sent a boy a video that was meant just for him. Several months later, one of her friends called to tell her that she had received a link on Facebook that showed a video of her. It was the video she had sent to this boy. The article reminds us (parents) that kids do crazy things to get attention from someone they like. Please read the article and find the time to talk to your kids about this.

Ridiculous Life Lessons From New Girl Games

I ran across this article,Ridiculous Life Lessons From New Girl Games from Wired.com, regarding life lessons being taught by videogames to tween girls. It made me think about how quickly I criticize some of the “boys” games. I am guilty of telling my son that a videogame is too violent or has inappropriate characters. Then I turn around to my daughter and suggest something like Imagine: Babyz Fashion with cute little babies that you can dress up. But is this teaching her that babies don’t feel good unless they look good? Will this teach her that she shouldn’t feel good about herself unless she looks good?
