Spring Break is here, and thanks to the economy, we are trying to find fun, creative, and cheap ideas to entertain my kids. Hello Wii! I almost felt guilty when I asked the kids to play games on the Wii, then I reminded myself of the reasons why video games are great! Aside from my first reason, it gives parents some uninterrupted time to accomplish a task when kids are around. (By the way, my first reason is what is allowing me to post this now!)
Strategic Thinking Skills/Problem Solving - Have you ever watched your child try to win the game? That is classic problem solving! I have heard detailed discussions revolved around Lego Star Wars/Indiana Jones/Batman and Pokémon. They are obsessed with getting to the next level. Guess what, they are using their problem solving skills.
Creativity - Expressing their creative side with music, dancing, singing and making mii's on the Wii. I know I express my creativity when I make my mii and definitely when I dance. When I don't get the move right, well, I am just being creative.
Cooperation/Getting Along With Others - Working together on teams to beat the Wii or another team. And let's not forget sportsmanship! Kids need to learn to win with humility and keep a good attitude, even when losing. Of course, we are still working on this at our house!
Physical - Wii sports games, need I say more? Have you ever tried to box on the Wii? I nearly passed out! I know, that means I'm not in good shape. So, I will break out the Wii Fit and challenge my kids!
Although, I must admit, I do agree that some of the negatives far outweigh the positives so limit their time and watch the ratings of the games. I do believe that watching too much violence can lead to more aggressive behavior.
Then there is family time... want to go bowling without leaving the house, play in a band, or defeat the DARKSIDE? Then have a Family Video Game Night. Video Games definitely have their pluses!
What are your kids/families favorite video games?
