Recently our family spent an evening making a Family Board Game. We started off with a poster board that we folded in half twice. We then used some clear packaging tape to tape the sides. This made the board more sturdy. We discussed how we wanted the game to work. We wanted it to be related to family events or things that have recently happened. We decided to make a path with a start and finish space. We filled in the blank spaces with directions and we used stickers to decorate.
We added the directions on the back of the board. Roll the dice, move that many spaces and follow directions on space. The first one to get to the finish space is the winner. We used 1 dice and Lego people as our game pieces.
We had a lot of fun with our spaces and revolved it around our family activities. Here are some of the spaces we used...
Mom runs late, -2
You outsmarted Dad, +2 if you are Dad, -2
Forgot homework, -2
Taylor gets lead in play, +2
Myles hits a homerun, +2
Taylor and Myles fight, -4
Test your game and make changes, if needed. Here are the steps to make your own...
- Think of a theme for your game. Will it revolve around your family, an adventure, etc? Use your imagination when deciding. You could use ideas from existing games if you like.
- Find a material to use for your board, cardboard or posterboard. Make the board and add start and finishing places. Set out a path or road for the character(s) to travel along.
- Design the images and pictures to go on your game. You can draw, use stickers, etc.
- Place images on the game board.
- Print off any other pieces, like rules, cards, tokens, etc.
- Test play as many times as you can.
- Have a friend or another person test it.
