My husband and I rarely get alone time these days. So, any activity that we can do together is a plus and sometimes we "accommodate" each other with activities that we may not choose. But it gives us some time together and typically a great conversation or heated debate follows.
For example, I love Project Runway and if you knew my husband, he would be that last one you would expect to watch this show. He believes clothes are there to cover your body, the words "style" and "fashion" must not have been in any dictionary he owned. He loves his old jeans and gets mad when I try to throw out old stained t-shirts and his "holey" underwear.
He will tell you, "I don't get fashion!" Runway Shows would leave him scratching his head, making these statements or asking these questions...
“What are they thinking?”
”I don't know anyone that dresses that way.”
”No one I know is that skinny.”
Then along came, "Project Runway" and we began watching it together. At first, he would say he watched it so we could have some "together time". Afterwards, we would enjoy discussing our "favorites", the judges reactions, the “cattiness” and especially Tim Gunn's "make it work" attitude.
After watching the "challenges" in which you are given 10 to 30 minutes to brainstorm, pick out materials, and then maybe 12 to 24 hours to complete your project was mesmerizing. My hubby once compared it to a project around the house. He said, "If you cannot sew, cut or measure – you are screwed. Having spent time in the garage sawing, cutting and measuring, I have screwed up plenty of projects in my life. I cannot imagine having to do it with only one trip to Home Depot in the very beginning."
My hubby really enjoys Tim's perspective and his appreciation of fashion. I think it is because Tim comes across so refined and intelligent. Although, my hubby isn't refined, I must admit he is intelligent and loves using big words. Anyone that causes him to go to the dictionary and look up the meaning of "sturm and drang", has his attention and respect. He also enjoys Tim's approach with the contestants. He inspires them (sometimes with a little more force) to dig deep, be creative but reminds them they still need to be functional and appealing.
Around this house, we refer to it as "Project Gunnway". Don't worry, Heidi, I see the way his eyes light up every time you are on screen. And I have heard references to your amazing talent and intelligence, and those don't come easily from my "hubby".
Thanks to Tim, my husband is now educated on the importance of fashion. He actually enjoys learning the history of fashion and appreciates the way it reflects the times. What my hubby does with this information is now up to him. So far, he still holds tightly to his stained shirts and "holey" underwear.
We are looking forward to the premiere of “Project Runway” Season 6 on August 20 at 10PM ET /PT on Lifetime!
