I saw this in the TODAY show and couldn’t believe it when I saw a young girl showing off this new baby doll… that you “pretend” to breastfeed. She put on a little shirt that has a flower petal, you guessed it, right where the doll should be nursing. The baby cried and then as it was brought close to the “petal” and began sucking. It was very strange to see a young girl about 6 to 8 years old holding a baby up to her breast, as it pretended to suck. As Kathi Lee said, “It was kinda creepy!” Kathi Lee also did her usual innuendos which, if you caught it, was “kinda creepy” and kinda funny! For those of you that are breastfeeding supporters, I wonder what you think of this? I can tell you that when my second child was born and it was time to nurse, my daughter came over and hung out with me. I had no problem with that. I didn’t even have a problem when she went and got her own doll and held it up pretending to “nurse” her baby. Nor did I flinch (ok, maybe I flinched a little) when she pulled up her shirt to nurse. Well...how does one respond to that one!!!???!!
First, I am a HUGE proponent of breastfeeding. I don't think one should hide and do it only in private, breastfeeding is natural and healthy and the best part is you can feed your baby ANYWHERE (but I don't think you should sit on a busy public bench with your breasts hanging out in the open either, discretion is always a good rule of thumb), and I think it's natural for other children to watch and learn.
However, I do think this toy is absurd! On so many levels...
1. Flowers for breasts?!? WHAT? Yeah, that's being real realistic...
2. What a boring toy.
3. What will they think to commercialize and make a profit on next? Isn't anything sacred and respected!?

Umm. Yeah. Not so great. I agree: "Kinda creepy." When I first saw this on twitter I laughed. Okay, so what? A doll that kids pretend to nurse with...my daughter was always copying my nursing and saying, "Shhh...I am nursing now." It was quite cute but most certainly NOT to the level of 'ick' that this doll provides the on-looker.
Why the need for actual suckling? I told my husband about this and he said, "Oh, well that's just going too far." We are both huge breastfeeding advocates - for the health benefits for the baby (immune disease protection) to the benefits for the mother: lower risk of breast cancer, etc. Not the mention the fact that it's FREE.
Biba is right - what the heck will they think of to commercialize next? It also offends me a bit that they want my daughter to grow up too quickly. My daughter copied my nursing at the age of 1.5. That was cute. At the age of 6+ it's just one more push of children from childhood to adulthood...that simply isn't needed.

I've just recently changed my older daughter to organic milk because of too many hormones. Why on earth would I purchase this to promote yet another thing to make my daughter feel older in her body than in her brain. I breastfed both my children longer than I was supposed to but it wasn't for the suckling noises. Does the doll come with cream for the petals?
