I just found out this week is National Sleep Awareness Week (week of March 1st). Perfect timing, since I have a habit of staying up until 2 or 3:00 a.m. I have recently realized the problems that arise from this amount of sleep. Obviously, it is not good for your health. So, in honor of "National Sleep Awareness Week" I decided to share some facts I have learned about sleep or lack of it.
Over 30 million Americans report problems with their sleep.
Adults need7 to 9 hours of sleep a night.
When you don't get enough you start accumulating a sleep debt, very difficult to "pay it back" or catch up.
Sleep deprivation contributes to obesity, high blood pressure, mood swings, decreased productivity, etc.
Insomnia has four main symptoms difficulty falling asleep, waking up too early - unable to fall back asleep, waking up frequently and waking up feeling tired and sluggish. Insomnia can be a symptom of a sleep disorder or other medical problems.
If you are sleepy during the day and have an urge to fall asleep when you should be alert, can be another sign of a sleep disorder or health issue.
During sleep your brain remains active and "recharges".
Waking in the middle of the night, unable to go back to sleep is a sign of insomnia. Try relaxation exercises and deep breathing, if you are unable to get back to sleep within 20 minutes, get out of bed. Try listening to relaxing music or reading a book then when you feel sleepy, return to bed and avoid watching the clock and worrying.

I have had sleep issues for as long as I can remember. Of course, due to lack of sleep, I can't remember much.
I am working on getting to bed earlier and going to sleep.
Does anyone else have problems with their sleep? Anyone have any other good suggestions, if so, please comment below.
